HIKING TRAILS

  • Cemetery Trails - Ironwood, MI

    • ​Starting from the Pure Michigan Welcome Center, this trail offers three loops for hiking and biking along the Montreal River. Sturdy shoes are recommended, especially during spring when the trail may be muddy.

  • Corrigan's Lookout - Upson, WI

    • Corrigan’s Lookout is a scenic bluff located in Iron County, Wisconsin, offering panoramic views of Upson Lake, the Gogebic Range, and Lake Superior. A short 0.25-mile hike leads to a rock outcrop that provides a picturesque vantage point, especially during the fall when the foliage is vibrant.

      • Directions: Look for a small white sign indicating the trailhead entrance.​

  • Iron Belle Trail

    • The Iron Belle Trail is the longest designated state trail in the nation. The trail offers opportunities for walking and biking with scenic overlooks of rivers and bluffs, railroad bridges, and historical sites. Trail access points include Bessemer, Ramsay Park, and the Ironwood Depot in Downtown Ironwood.

  • ​Miners Memorial Heritage Park - Ironwood, MI

    • ​Miners Park features a network of trails used for silent sport activities, including hiking and mountain biking. Interpretive signs along the trails highlight the area's mining history and offer educational information about the lives of local miners. ​​​​​​​​​

  • Montreal Ski Trails - Montreal & Pence, WI

    • The Montreal Ski Trails span 11 kilometers through Montreal and Pence, Wisconsin, offering hiking in the summer and trails suitable for all skill levels. The route passes the site of the former Montreal Mine, which operated from 1900 to 1962 and reached depths of over 5,000 feet. Interpretive signs highlight mining-era artifacts still visible today. A notable feature is the Miner’s Bell whistle, historically used to signal shift changes—please avoid the area at noon and 9 PM when it sounds. The trail also offers scenic views for stargazing and spotting the northern lights, including sights of Gile Flowage, Copper Peak, and Lake Superior.

  • Split Rock Trails - Wakefield, MI

    • ​ Split Rock offers opportunities for hiking, biking, and snowshoeing around the historic Flink Location iron ore mine. The trails pass through forested areas with scenic overlooks, unique rock formations, and remnants of a once-thriving Upper Peninsula mining town.

  • Wolf Mountain - Wakefield, MI

    • Wolf Mountain is the highest peak in Gogebic County. From the summit, visitors can enjoy a 180-degree view of the surrounding area, including the large Gogebic Lake.

  • Wolverine Trails - Ironwood, MI

    • ​The Wolverine Trails offer several looped routes designed for silent sports, including Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and biking.  Multiple trailheads are available depending on the location.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

  • Miners Memorial Heritage Park - Ironwood, Mi

    • Miners Park Mountain Bike Trails in Ironwood, Michigan, offers 10 miles of mountain biking trails within a 167-acre park located in the city center. The park sits on the site of former mining operations, and the trail network caters to cyclists of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Multiple trailheads are available around the park, including a connection to the Iron Belle Trail with a trailhead north of the site. In addition to mountain biking, Miners Park features walking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoe trails.

  • Wolverine Trails - Ironwood, MI 

    • Wolverine Trails features an extensive mountain bike system that includes technical single-track trails as well as wide grassy trails available for summer riding and hiking. Multiple trailheads are available depending on the location.
