St. Peter's Dome:
-
St. Peter’s Dome is an approximately 3.6-mile round-trip hike featuring rugged terrain, exposed rock, and steep climbs. The trail ascends to about 1,600 feet—the highest point in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, also known as “Old Baldy.” On a clear day, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views reaching Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands over 20 miles to the north. The summit provides a scenic and peaceful spot to rest or enjoy a picnic after the climb. Please note: This trail is not groomed—use caution. Snowshoes are recommended during snowy months.

ICE SKATING
The East End Skating Rink offers a classic outdoor skating experience, perfect for family fun or a casual winter outing. Located at the corner of 5th Street East and 16th Avenue East, the rink features a warming hut where skaters can take a break and thaw out between laps.

ICE FISHING
Ice fishing on Chequamegon Bay can be both fun and rewarding. Early-season fishing is popular along the Ashland shoreline, with hotspots near the Coal Dock, Ore Dock, and around the Lighthouse. Second Landing also offers great access, and on the Washburn side, anglers fish near Bodin’s Landing or Bono Creek. As winter progresses, ice fishing remains excellent throughout the Bay and even into spring. Common catches include brown trout, lake trout, splake, steelhead, cohos, whitefish, perch, walleye, and northern pike.
Later in the season, deep-water “bobbing” for lake trout becomes popular. Read the fishing report here.
Snowmobiling
Ashland County features over 220 miles of groomed snowmobile trails winding through scenic forests and public lands. Visitors should check current trail conditions, as closures can occur due to low snow. A valid Wisconsin snowmobile trail pass is required for all riders. View the trail report here.
